The vast majority of people who choose to walk home at night arrive safe and well and are never in any danger.

But being alone outside at night can sometimes be unnerving and many will feel that, despite the fact everyone should be able to make a journey without risk of anything unwanted happening, its only sensible to take a few extra measures and precautions.

Recent incidents, although extremely rare, have heightened fears about making journeys alone at night. Sarah Everard, 33, was the victim of “deception, kidnap, rape, strangulation, fire” after she was kidnaped by Pc Wayne Couzens when she was innocently walking home at night alone.

And Sabina Nessa, 28, was killed as she set off to take what should have been a five-minute walk from her home to meet a date at a pub. The Metropolitan Police confirmed Koci Selamaj, 36, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, had been charged with her murder.

There is actually plenty of support and help that you can get if you’re looking for a little extra peace of mind ahead of the next time you go out after dark. Here are some of the options…

WalkSafe is a personal safety app that allows you to avoid hotspots on your walk home.

The app includes a map that shows crime figures taken from monthly reports, whether that be sexual assault, mugging, knife crime, or pickpocketing.

If you are walking home and you come close to a street or area where crime has been reported, the app will alert you, so you can avoid that area and go another route home, where possible.

The app includes a ‘TapSafe’ feature, which allows you to check-in with your friends if you’re feeling unsafe. You can tap ‘OK’ every 30 seconds or ‘nervous’ every 10 seconds before your contacts are alerted and shown your location.

The handy HomeSafe feature lets you set an estimated time of arrival when you set off and will send your location to an emergency contact if you don’t get home in time. You can also set a reminder for emergency contacts to check in with you.

One Scream

One Scream is an app that can detect a scream and a text message and an automated call with your location is then sent to your nominated contact.

The app is all about giving users the confidence to feel safe and secure when they’re walking to their destination.

How does it work?

-A keyword or your panic scream triggers the app – even when your phone is buried in your bag.

– When the app is notified of danger, you will hear a loud siren, the phone vibrates and a notification pops up.

-You have 20 seconds to cancel the alarm if you need to.

-One Scream will then send an automated message to your

chosen contact can hear, identify, and get help.
